Job Description:

We are seeking a Sr. Product Development Engineer to provide engineering expertise and lead product development on our Interactive business from the early stages to on-shelf. Reporting to the Manager of Product Development, the Sr. Engineer will work with Marketing and Design to help evaluate the feasibility of new product concepts from an engineering perspective. In addition, this role defines how a toy should function consistent with agreed Marketing and Design feature and performance objectives, quality and safety requirements, launch timing and cost constraints.

Job Responsibilities:


  • Provide mechanical and electronic (mechatronics) engineering expertise throughout new product development
  • Examine parts/components to ascertain purpose, cost and value by utilizing knowledge of product design, development and cost engineering. Integrate budgetary considerations into evaluations
  • Participate in product brainstorming and help drive patented design solutions
  • Lead and manage products, proof of concepts and delivery of assets to all stakeholder
  • Drive productivity by implementing design for manufacturing/assembly up front
  • Understand cost of goods breakdown for product and identify opportunities to reduce complexity and/or cost. Guarantee cross-functional team alignment on reductions

Project Management

  • Drive project schedules from concept to production start including facilitation of weekly team meetings and escalation meetings as required
  • Partner with responsible departments to ensure all project milestones are delivered on-cost, on-spec, and on-time
  • Define and communicate product specifications to our global offices
  • Use schedule tracking software to manage and track key deliverables. Proactively resolve future issues to keep the product on track
  • Improve efficiency in the engineering process through continuous improvement


  • 5-7 years in Product Engineering experience with 3-5 years of project management
  • BS in Mechanical engineering, Mechatronics engineering, or related
  • Toy or consumer good experience an asset
  • Demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership to drive innovative yet cost-effective design solutions
  • Experience working with/managing communications with Design, Marketing and Engineering professionals both within and outside the company
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong interpersonal, communication and presentation skills
  • Ability to multi-task and prioritize competing demands
  • Desired: Understanding of plastic injection molding or other manufacturing processes related to low cost manufacturing in Asia
  • Knowledge of hobby electronics and sensors is an asset
  • Demonstrates a "hands-on" team approach to solving problems
