Role Purpose:

Lead Technical R&D and Corporate Engineering teams to develop new innovative technologies with complex design issues to support our Moulded Foam manufacturing plants, globally. Create the standards, processes, software tools, training, and documentation that define how the Manufacturing Engineering discipline operates and uses advanced technologies.  Lead the global rollout of standard technology and standard technology advancements (equipment and software) that result in savings from reductions in COPQ and/or increases in OEE.

Responsibilities: 

  • Troubleshoot and fix problems in plants using a structured problem-solving approach, particularly problems requiring a high level of expertise due to the interaction of multiple equipment components (i.e. robots, line, foamer, sensors, PLCs, process systems, programs).
  • Lead the largest R&D projects in the corporation (‘Big D projects’) with annual budgets of CAD$1M. As the “Project Manager”, responsible for achieving results on time and on budget. Secure approval of project funding, manage the team and activities, and provide updates to stakeholders. Establish high-performance teams, where the path forward can change frequently as new information is learned. Communicate updates to executives on milestones and next steps. Concisely summarize technical information into visuals and presentations that can be understood by an audience that may not have a technical background.
  • Execute installations and trials of equipment and software in plants in order to develop and implement advancements in technology. Responsible for Project Management, supporting Mechanical and Electrical Engineering by analyzing data to determine directions. Create test plans, installation schedules and decision points so the team can execute significant equipment changes during short installation windows with minimal disruption to the plant. Must be a master of execution, thoroughly planning all project details.
  • Lead and manage the world-wide rollout of innovations (i.e.  Insight, 0.2 s Pour Trigger). Co-ordinate Engineering and Plant activities (i.e. scheduling, training, documentation, technical support) so that implementation is seamless.
  • Create the standards, processes, software tools, training and documentation that define how the Manufacturing Engineering discipline operates advanced technologies (i.e. Reveal, Insight, Robot Programming). Responsible for establishing and maintaining the Standard Foamer Settings, defining 80 critical equipment settings used by Process Managers in all moulded foam lines. Development of the training modules used across the corporation for the Manufacturing Engineering discipline. Responsible for setting the standard pour weights and formulations used by plants in the budget process and ensuring that these budget values correctly take into account density specifications and chemical usage.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree (B.A.Sc.) in Chemical/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering
  • Graduate courses/degrees in Advanced Design, Project Management, SPC, Numerical Analysis, Computer Simulations & Modeling a plus
  • Demonstrated team leadership skills a must; Strong communication skills (written and oral) targeting multiple levels (from Executives to plant teammates)
  • Demonstrated impact in a PU manufacturing environment (designing chemical processing equipment, leading large technical projects from inception to Alpha site to Global rollout).
  • Experience with Woodbridge control systems; specifically how PLCs, sensors, software, robots, databases, and mechanical components work and interact
  • Must be able to travel globally
  • Travel estimated at 20% - 50% - project dependent, for short periods of time
