Job Description

Westmoreland Coal Company - Estevan Mine currently has a position available for a permanent, full-time Plant Process Engineer at Estevan Mine. Reporting to the Plant Superintendent, this position is responsible for a variety of tasks within the plant operations.

Duties and Responsibilities

Responsibilities include a wide range of activities including, but not limited to:

  • Work closely with the Chief Power Engineer and shift supervisors to develop process modifications required for improving the safety, production and maintainability of the AC and Water Treatments Plants.
  • Update operation/training manual for the AC Plant
  • Update operating/training manual for the Water treatment plant including the raw water supply from Pit 9 (primary back-up systems), the ultra-filtration process description and operation, the reverse-osmosis process description ( including regular chemical cleaning and periodic clean in place (CIP) procedures), operation of chemical metering pumps and safety requirements for handling and use of chemicals in the plant.
  • Take the lead in initiating and finalizing the design of the proposed projects.
  • Be involved daily with plant operations and maintenance supervisors to identify bottlenecks in the process and jointly develop and implement solutions.
  • Hours of work - Start - 7:00 am (be onsite by 6:45 to participate in daily update from operations and maintenance on plant performance, issues and planned process changes and maintenance work.
  • Responsible for Daily and Monthly Reporting - KPI's (site wide)
  • Responsible for jointly developed process changes in the tipple, calciner and dryer areas.
  • Track chemical usage and ordering
  • Assuming other responsibilities as required in response to changing circumstances and the economic and physical environment of the Mine or Company.

Minimum Qualifications and Skills:

The ideal candidate will:

  • Engineering degree in Chemical Engineering or relevant, P.Eng. designation
  • 5+ years of process engineering experience
  • Experience in one or more of the following areas is an asset: process monitoring and adjusting, troubleshooting and project management.
  • Experience with PFDs, H&MB, P&IDs, Management of Change, HAZOPs
  • Familiarity with labor, safety and environmental regulations and a working knowledge of Canadian codes in a process plant.
  • Team orientation with demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision in a challenging/matrix environment.
  • Demonstrated leadership, decision-making and negotiating skills as well as excellent communication and presentation skills.
  • Motivated, innovative and capable of handling several assignments
