Backend Data Engineer,  Machine Intelligence Retention

CBC Digital Products is the country’s biggest digital innovator, taking on the challenges of defining how media is made, sent and received. We are also part of Canada’s oldest and truest broadcasting company. We are trying new things. We are growing. As an entity of our own. As a voice for our country. As a team.

Digital is a part of our present and all of our future. CBC’s strategy is focused on becoming a digital-first organization that provides a digital platform for storytellers. Our mission is to engage our audience with stories they care about.

The opportunity

The Machine Intelligence Retention team has a vision to enable better decisions through big data. As part of CBC's initiative to reach all Canadians, our data platform is becoming the central hub for data insights and analysis that other teams can rely on as we continue to join disparate pieces of data together. Our goal is to build a product that identifies the drivers behind loyalty and retention for audiences and provides information to CBC content producers about their audiences.

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Data Science, and Machine Intelligence, we are adding a Backend Data Engineer  to play a critical role in the design and implementation of a middle tier for our powerful data management platform. As we move towards developing insights and recommendations in real-time, our team is looking for someone who is passionate about Machine Intelligence, confident in their capabilities, and eager to innovate. New project work that you may be involved with includes:

  • Building out a content analytics platform. You will be creating a connection between the back-end data platform with the audience facing components of our product in a scalable way.  In addition you will be creating API endpoints that enable other teams to connect to our back end.

If you're passionate about Canada and you love technology, learning, and bringing out the best in others, you'll love working at CBC.

Who you are

You are a developer with software and data engineering skills along with strong middle layer implementation skills and a deep understanding of front end and backend components. You have hands-on experience designing and building scalable infrastructure to support robust data platforms. You are passionate about data distribution. You may be at a startup or a corporate innovation lab. Either way, you are seeking an opportunity to make a measurable impact. You want to apply your expertise scaling solutions that enable the application of real-time insights to improve and enhance increased engaging experiences for the 18M Canadians who visit the CBC’s digital offerings every month.

What’s in it for you

Cutting edge tech: CBC has more than 25 digital sites, all of which are mandated to reach Canadians online everywhere and every way, with equal importance on their preferences and choices regardless of location. To achieve that goal, we have built a data management platform and are now focused on enhancing the machine intelligence capabilities for more in-depth analysis and actionable insights.

Belonging. CBC/Radio-Canada is a Canadian institution. By joining and helping to build our dynamic Digital team, you will be exposed to the best of all worlds. Corporate. Public. Startup. You will be part of a team that embraces diversity and, at its core, truly cares about the country and the world, a genuinely close-knit, fun, and collaborative team that believes in supporting the work of its members.

Career growth. The CBC is fully invested in our people. Whatever it is you want to pursue — whether it’s a new programming language, a technical solution, expanding your Agile knowledge, or building your leadership skills — we will provide you with the time, resources, and guidance that you need to keep your career here rewarding.

How you will make a difference, you will:

  • Build and deploy scalable and robust infrastructure for backend services and good APIs.
  • Define an integrated, RESTful/SOAP API or ETL solution design with support from front-end and back-end system teams.
  • Rapidly deliver and maintain high-performance, scalable systems, tools and processes to meet the needs of our rapidly growing engineering teams.
  • Create design artifacts using RAML and JSON Schema standards.
