Azure Cloud Engineer - Job Description

The Cloud Engineer will be responsible for building new Azure environments, participating in Azure architecture/design and maintaining CI/CD pipelines based on Azure DevOps. The role must support active Azure Infrastructure projects, and the development and QA teams as needed. The focus of this role is the successful implementation and management of our cloud initiatives that support efficient, robust, scalable, and secure solutions to meet business requirements and technology strategies. This includes collaborating on the planning, designing and production implementations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Work within a cross-functional team of Cloud Engineers, App Admins, DBAs and DevOps to specify, design, develop, test, and implement cloud services and solutions.
  • Leverage their systems and database implementation, monitoring and administration experience to envision, implement, secure, automate, and monitor various cloud solutions and deployments.
  • Manage cloud deployments with cloud administration tools and management frameworks with a focus on deploying Infrastructure as Code.
  • Identify, implement and support infrastructure & application monitoring solutions for cloud deployments.
  • Leverage industry best practices in defining and tuning appropriate on-demand cloud deployment architectures with security in mind
  • Visualize and create infrastructure and solutions architecture diagrams for internal and external projects
  • Take ownership of our continuous delivery pipelines
  • Manage the Azure DevOps portal and artifacts contained within.
  • Where a Project Manager, or Scrum Master is not assigned, this role will maintain the backlog and organize sprints to keep the focus on key deliverables and to align other resources on the team.
  • Responsible for ensuring our development team can deploy code quickly, reliably and securely
  • Evaluate and implement technologies to improve efficiency, performance, security and reliability
  • Provide guidance on strategies for monitoring, tracing and profiling applications
  • Forecast and plan for the infrastructure needs finding ways to improve the efficiency
  • Collaborate with Development, QA, Integration and other IT teams to detect, resolve and enhance Azure infrastructure problems
  • Provide guidance on building, testing and releasing applications to small teams of developers as the DevOps expert
  • Coaching and mentoring other team members in building their respective Cloud Engineering skills.

Azure Cloud Engineer - Mandatory Skills

  • 3 years + Extensive, relevant experience in a Cloud Admin or similar role.
  • Hands-on development and deployment experience on Azure leveraging IaaS/PaaS/ Serverless/API Management platform services
  • Focus on network security with in-depth knowledge of architecture and various security technologies.
  • A development background and experience with Visual Studio, Git, and related technologies. proven knowledge of scripting (PowerShell or bash)
  • Strong skills with Windows systems and *nix • Hands on experience in using IaC (Infrastructure as Code) tools; ARM templates, Terraform or similar.
  • Understanding of protocols/technologies SOA, API, HTTP, SSL, LDAP, SQL, HTML, XML, JSON, XML, YAML, etc.
  • Successful track record of providing production support for large-scale distributed systems, with experience in automation, production migration, and deployment with minimal down time.
  • Experience with version control software and job execution tools, preferably Git and Azure DevOps pipelines. Strong understanding of continuous integration/delivery practices and other DevOps concepts.
  • Extensive experience with cloud platforms, virtualization platforms and containers (Docker, VMware/vSphere, etc.).
  • Experience with container orchestration solutions like Kubernetes, Docker Swarm, etc.
  • Experience with Azure cloud services, such as Azure AD (B2B, B2C), DNS, VNet, routing, load balancing, Azure Application Gateway, Azure Service Environment, Azure Site 2 Site VPN, Azure Express Route, Enterprise networking concepts, CDNs, traffic managers, application gateway, API Management, Data Factory, Synapse analytics, Data Brick, Azure Monitor including Insights, dashboards & alerts, Azure multiregional production services backup and disaster recovery experience.
  • Post analysis and continual improvement of cloud resources utilization to provide optimization plans.
  • Ability to quickly learn and develop expertise in highly complex existing applications and architectures. Attitude to thrive in a high-production, customer-oriented environment.
  • Ability to contribute to multiple projects / demands simultaneously. Strong team player. Strong documentation and keen attention to detail.
  • Knowledge of Cloud Systems architecture (e.g. caching layers, content delivery networks, high availability practices)
  • Prior experience in hands-on troubleshooting of complex systems problems that includes capacity planning and performance tuning, reliability or high availability initiatives.
  • Degree in Computer/Software Engineering or a related area from a recognized educational institution.
  • Microsoft Azure certifications (Azure DevOps Engineer Expert, Solutions Architect Expert are highly preferred).
  • Multi-cloud experience a plus
  • Comfortable working with remote team members
  • MS SQL Server and Big Data knowledge

Nice to have:

  • Experience creating Selenium and J-Meter Automation for testing and monitoring
  • Software development life-cycle experience
  • Familiar with ITIL and ITSM Frameworks: system transition, systems operation and continual service improvement
  • Monitoring and support using tools such as Azure Monitor, Selenium, New Relic, PagerDuty, Elastic Search, Splunk, AlienVault etc.
