CBC Digital Products is the country’s biggest digital startup, taking on the challenges of innovating how media is made, sent and received. We are also part of Canada’s oldest and truest broadcasting company. We are trying new things. We are growing. As an entity of our own. As a voice for our country. As a team.

Digital is a part of our present and all of our future. CBC’s strategy is focused on becoming a digital-first organization that provides a digital platform for storytellers. Our mission is to engage our audience with stories they care about.

The opportunity

If you want to enter the world of digital media and be part of the change and growth of one of Canada’s long-established and respected broadcasters, this is your chance. CBC Digital Products is looking for a Senior QA Automation Developer to work with the Web Experience team.

This is an opportunity for a Senior QA Automation Developer who is ready to work autonomously and as part of a team; someone who wants to be a mentor to team members and help set the standards for Automation. This is a chance for a Senior QA Automation Developer who wants to be part of an Agile team that tackles the unique challenges presented by the diverse and expansive nature of our audience; and, expand their skills across the full SDLC including QA automation testing. This is a chance to verify and validate easily discoverable, engaging, and accessible online experiences across our digital offerings for sites such as CBC News, CBC Sports, Life, Arts, Comedy, and Radio. This can also include large scale events such as the Olympics and Federal Elections. Informed by our mission, our product strategy and our commitment is to be highly accountable to our audience.

This is a unique chance for a Senior QA Automation Developer, who wants to be part of building an engaging experience for over 18 million Canadians, growing the way they think about their software design; and learning from purposeful failure in a lean, Agile environment.

We welcome people who are strong collaborators and feel they can contribute in non-traditional ways. If you're passionate about Canada and you love technology, learning and bringing out the best in others, you’ll love working at CBC.

Who you are and where are you now?

You are an experienced QA Automation Developer looking to apply and build upon your skills, creating end-to-end user-facing products with an emphasis on discoverability, engagement, and personalization on our prominent sites such as CBC’s News, Sports, and Olympics. You understand the importance of accessibility and know what it takes to meet the needs of all users. You are looking for an opportunity to join a company with a mission, value set, and tech-forward approach that aligns with your own; a place where knowledge-sharing guides your learning.

You have experience in working with modern automation testing frameworks. You have a solid understanding of the underlying principles of software development and can pick up new technologies and languages with ease. You are familiar with gathering analytics, A/B testing, and how to iterate based on real data effectively. You are adaptable and willing to jump into different areas, features, products - wherever you are needed, you are happy to contribute.

Whether you are currently working in a startup, the corporate world or somewhere in between, you want to be part of a fun team, engaged in a continuous learning culture, where you can take on new challenges and be a significant contributor to engaging our national audience.

What’s in it for you?

Cutting edge tech: CBC has more than 25 digital sites, all of which are mandated to reach Canadians online everywhere and every way, with a high emphasis on mobile devices. To achieve that goal, with no downtime, takes a robust infrastructure, powerful technologies, reliable solutions, and rewarding work. All of which requires stringent automated testing and processes. You will work on a massive website that impacts our national audience (and the Canadian media landscape). You will face exciting technical challenges as we are continuously evolving and introducing new features.

Belonging: CBC/Radio-Canada is a Canadian institution. By joining our dynamic Digital Products team, you will be exposed to the best of all worlds. Corporate. Public. Startup. You will be part of a team that embraces diversity and at its core, truly cares about the country and the world; a genuinely close-knit, fun and collaborative team that believes in supporting the work of its members.

Career growth: CBC is fully invested in our people. Whatever it is you want to pursue whether it’s a new programming language or a technical solution, whether it’s expanding your Agile knowledge or building an audience-facing platform. We will provide you with the time, resources, and championing that you need to keep your career here rewarding. Members of our team have grown into QA Leads, introducing automation standards and processes across multiple projects; Senior Developers; Architects, Agile Team Leads or Product Owners.

What you bring:

  • The education: A Computer Science, Engineering, Math degree or equivalent is preferred, but we know not everyone gains their programming skills this way. You have the knowledge and understanding of software development and testing best - and latest - practices.
  • The hands-on expertise. You have hands-on experience using Selenium with Java (or another language) to test and validate web applications. You have experience:
    • With modern frameworks for testing and automation of the look and function of the user interface.
    • Gathering analytics, A/B testing, and how to iterate based on real data effectively.
    • Understanding of the entire application flow, from the data layer to the UI.
    • Testing API endpoints is an asset.
    • Testing code accompanied by unit tests sufficient to ensure code coverage.
    • Using test-driven development would be considered an asset.
    • Using tracking tools such as Atlassian JIRA is an asset.
    • Understanding of Continuous Integration practice.
  • The desire to learn. You can quickly learn new technologies and respond to change by learning and adapting.
  • The communication skills. You know how to listen and relay empathy and understanding for diverse perspectives. Your powers of observation help you understand your audience and communicate with the right level of detail.
  • The collaborative Agile experience. You thrive in a team-focused environment. You believe in the Agile methodology deeply, but you are flexible and open to the real world twists and turns. You are comfortable with iterative and incremental development.
