Description

CBC Digital Products is the country’s biggest digital startup, taking on the challenges of innovating how media is made, sent and received. We are also part of Canada’s oldest and truest broadcasting company. We are trying new things. We are growing. As an entity of our own. As a voice for our country. As a team.

Digital is a part of our present and all of our future. CBC’s strategy is focused on becoming a digital-first organization that provides a digital platform for storytellers. Our mission is to engage our audience with stories they care about.

The opportunity

This isn’t your typical machine intelligence role. You are taking the best of data systems engineering, machine learning and software development, and applying it to interesting problems you wouldn’t normally get a chance to solve at a big enterprise or a startup.

As a Senior Machine Learning Developer, you’ll be able to apply Machine Intelligence to products, where the expected outcome is to show value to our audience, rather than to increase company revenue. At CBC Digital Products, we tackle the hard problems, apply the very best solutions and reevaluate those choices when new data presents itself.

Our new Senior Machine Learning Developer position will join our growing Machine Intelligence practice and be responsible for research, development and deployment of Machine Intelligence algorithms, uniquely catered to our various product offerings and content areas, and their success metrics.

If you're passionate about Canada and you love technology, learning and bringing out the best in others, you’ll love working at CBC.

Who you are and what you bring

  • The passion for machine learning and data. You like to experiment and explore bleeding edge technologies and techniques, and validate their effectiveness.
  • The flexibility. You are comfortable with the level of ambiguity these new technologies and projects might bring.
  • The experience. You have strong software development principles and apply them rigorously. You have at least two years experience in building machine learning models and deploying them into production. To that end, we will be asking you to complete a timed technical assessment before setting up our first conversation. We want to respect your time, evaluate your skills and ensure you have the knowledge that will enable you to thrive and grow in our environment.
  • The education and the technical skills. Ideally, you have a Masters or Ph.D. in Computer Science. At a minimum a Computer Science, Engineering degree is required. Strong Python skills, along with knowledge of machine learning libraries (e.g. Tensorflow) is required for this role, with Java being a great second language to have. You have knowledge or interest in Big Data technologies, NoSQL, Google Cloud Platform, AWS, ETL, Statistics, or academic research.

What’s in for you

  • Cutting edge tech. You will be applying machine intelligence in novel ways for the creation of a product specific, and/or audience specific recommendation systems. This is a chance to experiment with various algorithms to help surface content to our audience without the creation of filter bubbles.
  • Building. As part of the Machine Intelligence team, you will create key data systems and data pipelines for the collection of content features, user features and link disparate data sources.
  • Career growth. You’ll be joining a team of highly capable and creative Machine Learning Developers, that has a strong team culture. CBC is fully invested in our people. We will provide you with the time, resources and championing that you need to keep your career here rewarding.
