Design Group Staffing has partnered with a leading Power and Utility company in the Northwest Territories, and we are currently recruiting for a Manager, System Control in Yellowknife, NWT

Position Overview:

As the Manager, System Control, you will be responsible for ensuring the effective and efficient operation of power generation facilities, primarily focusing on hydroelectric and diesel generation; as well as, the monitoring, forecasting and resolving of water issues at the hydroelectric facilities.


  • Manage a team of 5 System Operators – set objectives, assign duties, manage individual and team performance   
  • Manage water flows, reservoir levels and operations of remote hydro sites (reservoir levels, powerhouse and spillway flows)    
  • Monitor effective economic use of diesel and provide operating statistics and summaries      
  • Provide guidance and support for control and operation of power generation and distribution of power.  Ensure the system voltage, power quality etc., is maintained within acceptable tolerances     
  • Coordinate the assessment and response by System Operators to unscheduled or emergency operations to ensure power generation is restored in a timely and efficient manner    
  • Liaises with major customers, agencies, and community representatives regarding system problems, deficiencies and requirements    
  • Be a community representative to deal with individual and community issues while maintaining a positive public image

  • Technology Diploma or Journey-person Certification – ideally Electrical or Mechanical discipline is preferred, but will consider those outside of these disciplines who have relative experience    
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in the utility/power industry which includes leading team of Operators    
  • Strong interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with the customer service group in setting and accomplishing work objectives, and in maintaining cooperative working relationships with other Group Leaders and area staff    
  • Prior experience working with residential and commercial customers as well as government agencies   
  • A comprehensive understanding of local, regional and northern political and social economic conditions and values   
  • Strong organizational skills to coordinate team activities and ensure work is appropriately prioritized and actioned to meet local generation and regional objectives   
  • Analytical and problem-solving skills to research and assess outages and a variety of generation issues    
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office Suite, with advanced skills in Excel for reporting purposes
** Please note:  This is a permanent, full time position which requires relocation to Yellowknife, NWT.  Our client will consider applicants throughout Canada and will provide a comprehensive relocation package.
