Position: General Manager, NOC 0016 -  Senior Managers, Construction, Transportation, Production


Mastronardi Produce is seeking a successful candidate for the senior role of General Manager.  The successful candidate will be responsible for formulating and delivering upon Mastronardi’s business strategies, while managing the research and development team, and providing agronomical support to growers and propagation management.  This individual is also responsible for ensuring the appropriate supply of the highest quality berry plant material to support the development of Mastronardi BerryWorld America grower base. The candidate will also be responsible for ensuring berry plants are fit for purpose and of the right genetic potential through the support of genetic research and investment into soft fruit breeding programmes.  The position requires a combination of business and agronomy skills specializing in the berry industry.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Develop the Mastronardi BerryWorld America team and recruit and retain high calibre professionals.
  • Hold key strategic relationships with Grower, Nurseries and Marketing agents.
  • Ensure the MBWA business is sustainable and self-financing.
  • Ownerships of relevant Profit and Loss for the areas of his/her responsibility.
  • Prepare and present relevant annual budgets.
  • Ensure the appropriate supply of quality berry plant material to the MBWA grower base.
  • Ensure the correct berry plant type is being used and if necessary implement changes to the way propagation work carried out.
  • Create and hold berry plant specifications.
  • Deal with all local, regional, national and international berry plant movement laws to ensure material is shipped according to best practice.
  • Evaluate proposals for new berry varietals through building relationships and reviewing breeding program potential on all soft fruit lines.
  • Identify appropriate nurseries for berry propagation in North America, in line with the objectives of MBWA.
  • Maintain the relationship with existing berry nurseries, organize allocation of propagation plans between nurseries.
  • Manage claims from the growers on berry plants that are considered not fit for purpose.
  • Provide long term planning for berry plant availability and liaise with the operations and sales team to prepare long term production forecast.
  • Identify opportunities to acquire licenses to new berry varietal programmes in North America.
  • Help the operations team recruit new growers.
  • Help developing and maintaining long term relationship with growers.
  • Provide agronomical support to the growers
  • Oversee research and development activities.
  • Assist growers in berry plant orders.


Position Requirements:

  • Degree or diploma in horticulture or related area.
  • Minimum 5 years propagation and agronomy experience with all four major berries (strawberries, raspberries, blackberries and blueberries).  Appreciation of berry proprietary varieties and their economics (to clarify, all four major berries) is essential.
  • Minimum 5 years experience in handling vegetative propagation processes.
  • Minimum 5 years glasshouse experience.
  • Entrepreneurial mindset with ability to take business initiatives and make recommendations for process/business/technical improvements.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with ability to manage teams.
  • Problem solver.
  • Strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Must have valid passport to travel out of country – Especially to Mexico, the USA and Europe. 

  • Willingness to travel to assignments.

  • Driver’s license.
  • Computer skills (Microsoft Office) required.


Working Conditions:

  • Greenhouse and pack house conditions in NAFTA countries
  • Capable of lifting at least 25 lbs.
  • Position requires sitting, standing, walking and bending on a regular basis.
  • Must have manual dexterity to perform computer skills.


Salary: $140,000 to $155,000 depending on candidate’s qualifications and experience; eligible for

annual salary increase and discretionary bonus
