Director, Funding
Job Description

Purpose of the Job:

The Director, Funding is a key member of Meridian Credit Union’s leadership team reporting directly to the Vice President, Treasury. The Director, Funding is responsible for the operationalization and oversight of all external funding programs and facilities, the execution of the external capital generation plan, funding and capital planning and forecasting, and liquidity risk management.  The role supports the needs of Meridian and its subsidiaries. Continuing to expand Meridian’s suite of funding and capital programs and enhance Meridian’s liquidity risk management framework to meet increasing regulatory expectations and keep pace with best practices and global standards will be essential elements of the role.  Superior communication skills and the ability to influence are critical for this position including the translation of the technical language of Treasury in order to facilitate decision making at ALCO, the education of Senior Management and the Board, and communication and/or negotiation with industry peers, regulators, rating agencies and other funding and capital partners. 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Oversees debt management, capital management, collateral management and liquidity planning
  • Ensures sufficient funding is in place to cover working capital and liquidity needs including contingency funding needs
  • Manages bank and funding program relationships and access to the capital markets
  • Maintains proactive relationships with regulators and rating agencies
  • Scopes, negotiates and operationalizes new funding programs to ensure diversification of funding and an efficient overall cost of funding
  • Executes the external capital generation plan
  • Advises on the financing and capital implications of the Company’s long term strategies
  • Oversees an effective and prudent liquidity risk management program
  • Leads the development and adherence to liquidity risk management policies, procedures and practices appropriate for current statutory and economic conditions, including compliance with regulatory requirements, standards of sound business and financial practices and industry best practices and global standards.
  • Develops and facilitates a comprehensive education program to ensure that key stakeholders (Senior Management, ALCO and the Board) have the background required to provide effective governance over Meridian’s liquidity risk exposure
  • Leads the production of reporting to provide key stakeholders with ample insight to allow them to effectively monitor enterprise liquidity risks
  • Initiates and implements innovative treasury initiatives while ensuring risk is closely monitored across the business
  • Assists with recovery and resolution planning as well as other regulatory initiatives as they arise
  • Develop and implements FTP policies in partnership with the business


  • Provides leadership, council and mentorship to direct reports.
  • Leads effective performance management processes, employee development plans, succession planning and coaching strategies for direct reports.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience:

  • Undergraduate degree in finance, economics or related field with Professional accounting or Financial certification such as CFA/MBA/CPA CA/CPA CMA.
  • Minimum 5 Years’ experience in a Treasury leadership role within the financial services industry
  • Strong demonstration of people leadership, mentorship and development of a high quality team of professionals
  • Superior knowledge and exposure to financial markets and securitization programs
  • Experience dealing with regulators and rating agencies, building a positive working relationship and ability to lead detailed discussions on funding and liquidity risk matters
  • Strong demonstration of experience in negotiation with banks and other liquidity providers to ensure cost effective funding
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously with varied audiences and needs
  • Excellent communication and presentation skills including the ability to distill complex concepts into lay terms
  • Superior analytical skills with high commitment to quality and high level of attention to detail
  • Excellent ability to operate effectively in an entrepreneurial environment – ability to deal effectively with ambiguity and demonstrate a nimble approach
