Our client is looking to onboard an Assistant Controller to join their growing team. As an Assistant Controller, you will support finance operations and funding management. This role encompasses partial ownership of the full-cycle accounting process. That includes the maintenance of the chart of accounts, accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, month-end accruals, closing and issuance of financial statements and financial reports to stakeholders. ln addition, the Assistant Controller will be responsible for HST reporting and remittances, payroll administration, account and bank reconciliations. Primary responsibilities for the Assistant Controller role will include (but not be limited to): ? Preparing monthly financial reports within defined reporting timelines, liaising with key stakeholders for input as necessary during the process. ? Assisting with establishing corporate and business unit level budgets and forecasts. ? Providing accounting and finance support to new start-up entities including, but not limited to, financial reporting, business planning, tax planning and compliance. ? Being a key service provider to the various business units and departments in support of their mandates. ? Assisting in managing the annual financial statement audit, including the preparation of all audit schedules and samples of documents selected for testing. ? Defining and developing additional metrics and financial reports required of stakeholders. ? G/L maintenance - adding to and editing chart of accounts to support reporting requirements. ? Reviewing accounts receivable invoices and overseeing collections activity; acting as a back-up for invoicing and billing as needed. ? Reviewing the input of invoices in the system to ensure accuracy, validity, completeness and timeliness. ? Bank deposits and posting all cash transactions. Preparing a weekly cash flow forecast and recommending transfers to and from investment accounts to ensure optimal use of funds. ? Organizing periodic inventory counts. ? Performing monthly review of sub-ledger (maintained by lntermediate Accountant); calculating and posting monthly amortization and write-off assets on disposition; performing periodic review of capital asset accounts for items expensed in error, and certain expense accounts for capital items. ? Reviewing the semi-monthly payroll entry for accuracy and submitting to third-party payroll provider. ? Reviewing commodity tax returns prepared by accounting staff and file related remittances. ? Preparing and posting month-end accruals and adjusting entries in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). ? Reviewing bank and account reconciliations prepared by accounting staff. ? Documenting accounting policies, processes and controls. ? Assisting with lT systems improvements and needs gathering.
Job Requirements
In order to be considered for the Assistant Controller role, you must: ? Have a local University degree in business or accounting. ? Be a designated CPA (Big 4 only) ? Have 3-5 years of full-cycle accounting experience, in Not For Profit (NFP), or biotech, or a start up (or combination thereof). ? Have strong understanding/experience with complex environments and IT systems. ? Have 1-2 years of supervisory experience. ? Be proficient with the Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel [pivot tables, integration, vlookup], Outlook). ? Experience with Dynamics GP, SAP Concur, and Ceridian PowerPay an asset. ? Be well organized, analytical, a problem solver, diligent, confident, and an active listener. ? Have the ability to understand complex issues and financial linkages in applying knowledge. ? Be able to manage priorities, coach fellow team members, and ensure deadlines are met. ? Be a collaborative team player with respect for others.
