Assistant General Manager

Location: Edmonton, AB

Southland Transportation is currently seeking an experienced transportation professional to join our team in Edmonton in the role of Assistant General Manager. This individual will be a team player, accountable to lead, mentor and enhance the skills development of employees by providing timely support and delegating appropriate responsibilities. The Assistant General Manager also develops and maintains professional relationships with school boards, parents and school staff. This position is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the operation, including school bus and charters.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Post-secondary education with an emphasis on Management
  • Previous transportation operations and management experience
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to interact professionally while exhibiting confidentiality and diplomacy
  • Expertise in organizational planning and problem-solving
  • Knowledge of WCB and Occupational Health and Safety regulations
  • Knowledge of budgeting and financial statements
  • Computer proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

  • Delegate responsibilities to the Operations Supervisors
  • Collaborate on and ensure employee development/succession plans are in place
  • Negotiate contracts and assist with the preparation of tender documents
  • Represent Southland at school board and customer meetings
  • Meet monthly with Drivers' Reps to discuss issues brought up by drivers
  • Create and/or improve existing Operations systems and procedures
  • Work with internal stakeholders ensuring the business' Strategic Goals are met
  • Uphold and be an example of the company's Core Values

Typical hours are 8:00 am - 5:00 pm, Monday to Friday. However, it is the responsibility of the Assistant General Manager to ensure work is completed and this may involve the extension of hours both in the morning and afternoon. Holidays are taken around the needs of Southland and the Boards it serves.
