At NPower Canada, a charitable organization established in 2014, we are on a mission to help as many young people as we can by providing them with the technical and soft skills they need to secure employment in the technology field, often lifting themselves and their families out of poverty.

We provide an all-encompassing program that teaches in-demand technical and soft skills as identified by our employment partners from banks to startups. We take our program - and our youth - to the next level by including one-on-one and group coaching that builds business communication and customer-facing skills as well as addresses mental health and other societal obstacles that may impede completing certification. Our goal is to connect at least 80% of our program graduates to new and rewarding career opportunities with some of Canada’s largest employers, supporting all of our alumni with ongoing mentorship and placement support for five years after they complete our program.

Our unique approach to workforce development has seen over 1400 youth graduate from our programs in the last 5 years. In addition to growing our current capacity, we are scaling our model to include alumni education programs through a $2.5 million grant from Google.org and a new reskilling program. To support our growth within the GTA, in Calgary and soon in Halifax and Vancouver, we are adding passionate, collaborative, motivated, and compassionate team members to our offices.

Right now, we are searching for an Alumni Placement Specialist.

Who we need

Reporting to the Senior Manager, Employment Engagement, we are adding an Alumni Placement Specialist to the team in Calgary. This is an opportunity to play a vital role in the success of our new Alumni Program and the experience of our returning program participants seeking the skills to reach the next level of their career. With an aim to assist with career enhancement through courses such as Associate Cloud Engineer and Automation with Python, this is an exciting and unique expansion. You will be accountable for forging new partnerships with employers in technology, growing our network of mentors, and coaching participants as you develop an understanding of their strengths and needs. Ultimately, you will take ownership of ensuring that 80% of program participants are successfully placed in a technology role directly related to their new skills or have gained admission to higher education within 6 months of course completion with us. I.T.. is what we do, transforming lives is what motivates us. If you want to help launch the tech careers of under-served, young adults, join us as the new Alumni Placement Specialist.

Who you are

You have business development, sales, or recruiting experience, and you want to apply your skills to make an impact by creating employment opportunities for young adults. You are an energetic, dedicated, and engaging relationship builder who understands technology. You are target driven and can open doors to assist youth with employment placements - and life - opportunities.

What's in it for you

Purpose. This is an outstanding opportunity to see the tangible results of the work you do, connecting directly with diverse learners, many of whom have struggled to access or complete post-secondary education in a high-touch environment. This is a genuine chance to impact a young adult's life, empowering them to contribute back to their community as they grow personally and professionally.

Growth potential. You will have ongoing opportunities to expand your skills and grow your career. As we continue to expand our program offerings both locally and nationally, we will increase the size of the Alumni Placement team. You could move up to a Team Lead, a Manager, or an Account Manager role and beyond. Over 75% of our staff have grown their capacity and moved up in roles and responsibilities since starting here. If you are passionate about our purpose, you will find a fulfilling career path here.

Exposure. You will have the opportunity to work with leaders, team members, and partners in the workforce development field to address the growing issue of youth un/under employment. Your work will also directly impact the growing skills gap in the I.T. industry in Alberta.

How you will make an impact:

  • Employer engagement. You will foster the creation of long-term hiring partnerships that serve both employers and youth. You will:
    • Engage potential employers who are most likely to hire NPower Canada graduates, providing them with evidence-based outcomes of participant success in the I.T./ Digital industry, motivating them to hire youth.
    • Maintain a dual-customer approach, matching graduates with opportunities best aligned with their skills and interests, while offering employers a high-quality, reliable talent solution.
    • Develop an in-depth understanding of an employer's needs, values, and available positions, and use insights to match the employer with candidates whose goals, interests, and aptitudes align with their needs.
  • Employment placement. You will connect participants with employers. You will:
    • Pre-screen program participants for employment readiness and suitability for specific roles by conducting telephone and online assessments and mock interviews.
    • Curate rosters of suitable participants based on employers' specific hiring needs and skills requirements.
    • Guide program participants through employers' recruiting systems and processes, ensuring that online applications, background checks, and other critical steps are completed quickly and accurately.
    • Liaise between employers and participants to obtain feedback on interviews, extend offers of acceptance, and complete any other required paperwork.
  • Placement monitoring and support. You will act as the first point of contact for inquiries from employer partners and NPower Canada alumni. You will:
    • Provide timely support, proactively troubleshoot issues, and resolve concerns.
    • Connect frequently with graduates and their supervisors to ensure that expectations are being met, obtain updates, and offer additional support.
    • Conduct supervisor quality checks and satisfaction surveys to gather feedback and flag any issues for follow-up.
  • Data collection, administration, and reporting. You will prepare regular reports on job placement and retention, conduct quarterly surveys of graduates, and ensure data integrity and security.
  • Career development coaching. You will support alumni with the next steps of their employment or education. You will:
    • Organize hiring events to connect them with jobs and help their continued career progression.
    • Assist with planning for their continued education.
    • Provide job retention coaching to help them successfully resolve workplace challenges, improve workplace communication skills, and overcome performance issues.
    • Stay connected with alumni for a minimum of sixty (60) months post-hire, touching base on a frequent and consistent basis via telephone, e-mail, and text to confirm employment/educational status and to offer support as needed.

What you bring to the team:

  • The education. You have post-secondary education in human resources, business, human services, or a related area.
  • The experience. You have 2 to 3 years in business development, sales, recruiting, or job development. Ideally, you have a network of contacts in technology - or you are ready to go out, knock on doors, pick up the phone, and make those connections.
  • The compassion. You exhibit a high level of sensitivity, relatability, and emotional intelligence. You have an understanding of the socio-economic and mental health barriers faced by young adults of all backgrounds, and you have experience working with diverse community members, including new Canadians, people with disabilities, LGBTQ, low income, and racialized groups.
  • The self-motivation. You are metrics-driven and have a proven history of successfully meeting your targets, using a CRM such as Salesforce to manage and track your data and reporting. You thrive in an autonomous role, successfully achieving your goals and doing what it takes to make a difference in the lives of our participants.
  • The relationship-building. You are engaging, empathetic, and relatable. You can foster and nurture internal and external relationships with participants, colleagues, funders, community and employer partners, and other stakeholders. You have exceptional communication and issue resolution skills and can navigate sensitive situations with diplomacy and tact.
  • The team spirit. You are willing to share, learn, and grow as part of a diverse, remote team. We have weekly scrums to prioritize objectives and address challenges; but, we also have bi-weekly trivia meetings where we talk about anything but work; it's a great way to come together.

Why should I join?

Joining NPower Canada is an opportunity to make an I - M - P - A - C - T:

Innovation. You will be part of our continuously evolving purpose, to reflect the needs of our employers and respond to the needs of the youth we support. We are always looking for ways to change, and we want  team members to propose and try new ideas.
