15 of the Fastest-Growing Occupations in Canada

As recent college graduates celebrate their commencement, they’ll be looking ahead to what’s next. For those ready to enter the workforce, they may find more career stability by pursuing industries that are showing growth.

To help graduates – or any type of job seeker – determine which promising career path to consider, CareerBuilder.ca released a list of industries and occupations with higher than average job growth nationwide from 2015 to 2020. Industries that are projected to experience at least 10 per cent growth in employment over the next five years include*: community care facilities for the elderly, home health care services, child daycare services, computer systems design and related services, and oil and gas extraction.

The following are 15 occupations within these five fast-growing industries that are projected to experience the highest growth in employment through 2020:

Industry: Community care facilities for the elderly

Community and social service workers administer and implement a variety of social assistance programs and community services, and assist clients in dealing with personal and social problems. They are employed by social service and government agencies, mental health agencies, group homes, school boards, correctional facilities and other establishments.**

  • Median hourly earnings: $20.80

Registered nurses provide direct nursing care to patients, deliver health education programs and provide consultative services regarding issues relevant to the practice of nursing. They are employed in a variety of settings including hospitals, nursing homes, extended care facilities, rehabilitation centres, doctors’ offices, clinics, community agencies, companies and private homes, or they may be self-employed.

  • Median hourly earnings: $36.48

Food counter attendants prepare, heat and finish cooking food items and serve customers at food counters. Kitchen helpers clear tables and kitchen areas, wash dishes and perform other activities to assist workers who prepare or serve food and beverages. They are employed by restaurants, cafes, hotels, fast food outlets, cafeterias, hospitals and other establishments.

Industry: Home health care services

Visiting homemakers provide ongoing or short-term home support services for individuals and families during periods of incapacitation, convalescence or family disruption. They are employed by government, non-profit and home care agencies, or are self-employed. Housekeepers perform housekeeping and other home management duties in private households, embassies and other residential establishments.

Registered nurses

Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates assist nurses, hospital staff and physicians in the basic care of patients. They are employed in hospitals, nursing homes and other health care facilities.

Industry: Child daycare services

Early childhood educators plan and organize activities for preschool and school-age children. Early childhood educator assistants provide care and guidance to preschool children under the supervision of early childhood educators. They are employed in child-care centres, kindergartens, nursery schools, agencies for exceptional children, and other environments where early childhood education services are provided, or they may be self-employed.

Managers in social, community and correctional services plan, organize, direct, control and evaluate the programs and activities of social service and community agencies, correctional institutions, counselling departments, labour organisations, professional associations, political parties and non-governmental organisations.

Cooks prepare and cook a wide variety of foods. They are employed in restaurants, hotels, hospitals and other health care institutions, central food commissaries, educational institutions and other establishments.

Industry: Computer systems design and related services

Information systems analysts and consultants conduct research, develop and implement plans, policies and procedures, and provide advice on a wide range of information systems issues. They are employed in information technology consulting firms and in information technology units throughout the private and public sectors, or they may be self-employed.

Computer programmers write, modify, integrate and test computer code for microcomputer and mainframe software applications, data processing applications, operating systems-level software and communications software. Interactive media developers write, modify, integrate and test computer code for Internet applications, computer-based training software, computer games, film, video and other interactive media. They are employed in computer software development firms, information technology consulting firms, and in information technology units throughout the private and public sectors.

  • Median hourly earnings: $33.93

Software engineers and designers research, design, evaluate, integrate and maintain software applications, technical environments, operating systems, embedded software, information warehouses and telecommunications software. They are employed in information technology consulting firms, information technology research and development firms, and information technology units throughout the private and public sectors, or they may be self-employed.

  • Median hourly earnings: $41.21

Industry: Oil and gas extraction

Petroleum engineers conduct studies for the exploration, development and extraction of oil and gas deposits; and plan, design, develop and supervise projects for the drilling, completion, testing and re-working of oil and gas wells. They are employed by petroleum producing companies, consulting companies, well logging or testing companies, in government, and research and educational institutions.

  • Median hourly earnings: $50.35

Oil and gas well drillers and well servicers control the operation of drilling and hoisting equipment on drilling and service rigs, and direct the activities of the rig crew under supervision of the rig manager. Oil and gas well loggers, testers and related workers operate specialized mechanical or electronic equipment, tools or instruments to provide services in conjunction with well drilling, completion or servicing. They are employed by drilling and well service contractors, petroleum producing companies and well logging or testing companies.

Financial auditors examine and analyse the accounting and financial records of individuals and establishments to ensure accuracy and compliance with established accounting standards and procedures. Accountants plan, organise and administer accounting systems for individuals and establishments. They are employed by auditing and accounting firms throughout the private and public sectors, or they may be self-employed.
