OVERVIEW

You will provide medical practitioners and specialists with the diagnostic imaging data required to diagnose and treat medical and surgical conditions.

WHAT THEY DO

Medical Radiation Technologists work in clinics, on ships and in operational units. They must provide patient care, conduct diagnostic examinations, assist radiologists, medical specialists and medical officers, and maintain equipment, accessories and supplies. They must also maintain a Quality Assurance Programme and provide continuing education in diagnostic imaging technology. Medical Radiation Technologists are an integral part of the medical teams that work to provide accurate patient diagnoses.

 


Job Requirements 

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

You must be a certified Medical Radiation Technologist licensed with the Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists and possess above-average manual dexterity and eye-hand coordination in order to use and handle very delicate and expensive instruments and precision equipment. You must also be very physically and psychologically fit as Medical Radiation Technologists often work long hours.

The CF has introduced a series of recruitment allowances for eligible NCM applicants entering the Regular Force.

 

  • $10,000 signing bonus for NCMs with a post-secondary diploma or certificate
  • $20,000 signing bonus for civilian trade-qualified NCMs
  • $20,000 signing bonus for Military Occupation-qualified NCMs

These allowances apply to new recruits, re-enrolees and Reserve Force members who are transferred to this target Military Occupation group.

 

Depending on their qualification level, many qualified recruits are also eligible for incentives such as promotion to the rank of Acting Corporal immediately after successful completion of basic training.

 

TRAINING     

The first stage of training for all new recruits is the 13-week Basic Military Qualification (BMQ) course at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec.

 

Upon completion of the BMQ, Medical Radiation Technologists are promoted to Corporal and are assigned to their first posting, where they will undertake a one-year preceptorship.

 

 WORKING ENVIRONMENT

Medical Radiation Technologists work in a variety of health facilities and institutions or in the field, and also take part in peacekeeping missions and humanitarian missions around the world. They often work independently or with one other person. They must be alert and pay attention to detail at all times and must frequently demonstrate initiative when on call. Medical Radiation Technologists must consistently meet high standards of performance.
