DUTIESVancouver Island University is seeking enthusiastic and dynamic individuals to instruct and evaluate emergency response related programs for Vancouver Island Emergency Response Academy (VIERA). VIERA is a joint venture between Nanaimo Fire Rescue and Vancouver Island University (VIU) with a primary goal of delivering quality, cost effective training with local instructors in BC Zone 1 which includes Vancouver Island, the Gulf Islands and the Sunshine Coast. Therefore preference will be given to applicants from the region. We are seeking instructors with expertise in the following subject areas: - NFPA 472 Hazardous Materials - Awareness and Operational - NFPA 1001 Fire Fighter - Levels 1 and 2- NFPA 1002 Fire Apparatus Driver/Operator Qualifications - NFPA 1021 Fire Officer - Levels 1 and 2- NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor - Levels 1 and 2- NFPA 1521 Incident Safety OfficerReporting directly to the VIU Centre for Continuing Studies Department, Instructors will be required to provide a wide variety of functions including, but not limited to, the following: instruct and/or evaluate one or more of the above subjects in accordance with NFPA Standards and the requirements of Pro Board accreditation; act as a subject-matter expert in the development of curriculum and supporting material as required; be available to travel throughout the region to deliver programs directly to fire departments at fire department facilities; manage classroom and practical training sessions in a safe and efficient matter; and provide constructive feedback to VIERA, its students and co-instructors.The two primary VIERA campuses are located in Nanaimo at Vancouver Island University and Nanaimo Fire Rescue. Travel may be required to deliver programs at fire departments throughout the region. * Please specify on you application the program you are interested in instructing.



Job Requirements

RequiredCertified to the NFPA standard that individual is to instruct or evaluate. Five years service in a Career Fire Department or eight years service in a Volunteer Fire Department or equivalent expertise and/or experience in an Industrial Brigade. NFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor 1; NFPA1521 Certified Incident Safety Officer or experience demonstrating equivalent competency. Minimum Class 5 Driver's License and a confirmed satisfactory driving record (as specified in Vancouver Island policy and procedures).

PreferredNFPA 1041 Fire Service Instructor 2; Provincial Instructor Diploma or Certificate in Adult Education or equivalent; extensive subject-matter expertise in fire service subjects; extensive experience as an adult educator or Training Officer in the fire service; primary residence and a member of a fire department within BC Zone 1 (Vancouver Island, Gulf Islands, and Sunshine Coast); Class 3 driver's license with restriction 15 (air brakes).
